The Art Nouveau (or "New Art") art movement lasted from the late Victorian era to the First World War. As an art style, Art Nouveau is characterized by organic and curvilinear forms, often floral- and plant-inspired, along with an emphasis on the female form.
Well known Art Nouveau artists include Gustav Klimt, Alphonse Mucha, Audrey Beardsley, Koloman Moser, Privat Livemont, Antonio Gaudi, and Georges de Feure. Significant related artists include Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka. Related movements include the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, Belle Epoque, Art Deco, and Arts and Crafts art movements.

Alphonse Mucha was born in 1860 in Moravia in what was then the Austro-Hungarian Empire (now the Czech Republic), and died in 1939. He started out painting theatrical scenery, and later attended the Munich Academy of Fine Arts. In 1887, he went to Paris, where he began his career as a poster artist. While Mucha's art style was considered old fashioned during the latter part of his life, it was later to influence psychedelic poster artists of the 1960s. [More...]
Gustav Klimt was born in 1862 near Vienna, Austria, and died in 1918. His father was an engraver. He was educated at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts from 1879 to 1883 and began his art career painting murals in public buildings in Vienna. Klimt was influenced by Egyptian, Classical, and Japanese art. Klimt was a leader in the Wiener Sezession (or Vienna Secession) movement, along with Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka, Koloman Moser, and other artists. His work is characterized by decorative elements, often in gold leaf, as well as the sensual depiction of the female figure that often caused critics to label his paintings as pornographic. [More...]
Aubrey Beardsley was born in 1872 in Brighton, Great Britain, and died at in 1898, from tubercolosis at the age of 25. He is best known for his illustrations for the literary magazine, The Yellow Book, and the play Salome by Oscar Wilde. [More...]
