Biography: Aubrey Beardsley was was born in 1872 in Brighton, England, and died of tuberculosis in 1898 in Menton, France, aged 26. He came from respectable middle-class roots. In 1883, the family moved to London, where Aubrey drew attention as a musical prodigy. By age 12, he'd shown signs of talent both in writing and drawing. At age 16, he took a post first in an architect's office and then in an insurance company. On the advice of Edward Burne-Jones and Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, he began taking night classes at the Westminster School of Art in 1892. Through Burne-Jones, Beardsley met Oscar Wilde, which led to his illustrating Wilde's Salome. Wilde was not entirely happy with Beardsley's illustrations, fearing their provocative content would draw censure on both of their heads. After Wilde's trial and conviction for sodomy, Beardsley, who was linked to Wilde through the illustrations and both being homosexual, was fired from his job as artistic editor for the Yellow Book periodical. A primary influence on Beardsley was John Abbott McNeill Whistler, from whom he adopted a focus on the line and the use of large black areas in his compositions, as well as an interest in Japanese art.
