Biography: Giovanni Bellini was born in 1430 in Venice, Italy. He died in 1516, aged 85 or 86. He was born to a family of painters, including Jacopo Bellini (his father), Gentile Bellini (his younger brother), and Andrea Mantegna (his brother-in-law), who was a major influence on his development as an artist. Bellini was one of the first Renaissance artists to move from painting with tempura and take up painting in oils, a technique introduced in Italy about 1473 by the Venetian painter Antonello da Messina, who had learned it from northern painters while living in Flanders. Bellini's long career bridged the differences between the Early Renaissance styles of the 1400s (or Quattrocento) and the High Renaissance, which commenced in the 1500s. Two of Bellini's pupils, Giorgione and Titian, would help bring the High Renaissance to full flower. Check out our
