Biography: Albert Bierstadt was born in 1830 in Solingen, Germany. He died in New York City in 1902 at the age of 72. His family emigrated to the United States in 1832 when Bierstadt was two. He studied art and painting at the Dusseldorf School in Germany between 1853 and 1857. In 1859, he began what would become several trips "out west," returning with sketches he would later turn into finished paintings. He's generally included in the Hudson River School of landscape painters, although he's best known for his scenic paintings of the far west. Other members of the school include Thomas Cole (1801-1848), Martin Johnson Heade (1819-1904), Frederic Edwin Church (1826-1900), Hermann Herzog (1831-1932), and Thomas Moran (1837-1926).
