Biography: Arnold Bocklin was born in Basel, Switzerland, in 1826. His father was a merchant and at first opposed his son choosing art for a career. He studied art and painting under Johann Wilhelm Schirmer at the Dusseldorf Academy of Art. He lived the life of the itinerate artist from 1847 to 1853, living and studying in Brussels, Antwerp, and Rome, before being appointed as a professor at the University of Weimar in 1860. His work shares characteristics with Romanticism, and Symbolism, and is a precursor of Surrealism, with Salvidor Dali, Max Ernst, Giorigio de ChiricoChirico, and Rene Magritte all being influenced by him.
