Biography: Rosa Bonheur was born in 1822 in Bordeaux, France. She died in 1899, aged 77, in Thomery, France. Her father, Oscar-Raymond Bonheur, was a painter. Two of her younger siblings were also painters, while another was a sculptor. She was educated as a painter by her father, starting at the age of 12. She is best known for her realist paintings of animals. Exhibiting first at the Salon in 1841, by age 23 she had already shown 18 works there. Her most famous paintings were Ploughing in the Nivernais, exhibited in the 1848 Salon, and The Horse Fair, measuring 8 by 16 feet, completed in 1855, on government commission. That she never married, wore men's clothing, cut her hair short, smoked cigarettes and cigars, and lived with a couple female companions (one a childhood friend and the other only in the last year of her life) drew comment in her lifetime and have led many to consider her to have been a lesbian, although she always claimed wearing pants was simply practical when working in the fields or with animals.
