Biography: Hieronymus Bosch was born as Jeroen van Aken in 1450, taking the Bosch name from the town of his birth, 's-Hertogenbosch, in the Duchy of Brabant, now part of the Netherlands. He died in 1516 at the age of 66. His ancestors came originally from Aachen in Germany. He most likely learned his art from his father, who was also a painter, as were several of his uncles and a brother. In 1488 he joined the Brotherhood of Our Lady, a religious group of influential citizens. The themes of his paintings are concerned with religion, salvation, damnation, earthly sins, heavenly rewards, and infernal punishments. Otherwise, little is known of Bosch's actual life. He influenced Pieter Brueghel the Elder and Pieter Brueghel the Younger. He has also been claimed by the Surrealists as one of their own, due to the imaginative contraventions of reality evident in his works. Other notable Dutch, Flemish, and German painters of the early Northern Renaissance include Jan van Eyck, Albrecht Durer, and Lucas Cranach the Elder.
