William Bouguereau, 19th Century Academic Painter: Evening Mood Biography: William-Adolphe Bouguereau was born in 1825 in La Rochelle, France. He died in 1905 at the age of 79, also in La Rochelle. He began studying art under Louis Sage, who'd studied under Ingres, and then under Francois-Edouard Picot. Bouguereau regularly exhibited at the Paris Salon. At his height, Bouguereau was one of the most successful painters in the history of art, but fell into disrepute as the taste of the public turned away from academic art toward the more modern art of the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists.

It is only in more recent times that art historians and critics have come to re-appreciate his work. Other French academic painters included Andre Cabanel, Jean-Louis Meissonier, Leon Bonnat, and Jules Lefebvre.

Bouguereau is often associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, but there was no direct connection between them, other than both largely being comprised of academic artists, the one French and the other British.
