Alexander Calder, Modern American Artist and Painter: Mobiles Biography: Alexander Calder was born in 1898 in Lawnton, Pennsylvania. He died in 1976 at the age of 78 in New York City. Both Calder's father and grandfather were sculptors, while his mother was a portrait painter who had studied in Paris. Although he showed precoscious artistic abilities growing up, Calder chose to study mechanical engineering out of high school, working several years as an engineer after graduating. In the early 1920s, he decided to pursue an art career instead, studying art at the Art Students' League in New York City. While visiting Paris, he was influenced by Piet Mondrian to take up abstract art. Other artists who influenced Calder were Pablo Picasso, Joan Miro, and Jean Arp. Calder is best known for his invention of the mobile, a delicately poised kinetic sculpture suspended by wires and animated by air currents in the room, for which his background in engineering played a key role. Alexander Calder Serigraphic Prints

A Serigraph is created when paint is 'pushed' through a silkscreen onto paper or canvas. A different screen is used for each color in the print, and this results in a print with great color density and many qualities of the original piece in terms of color saturation. This process also adds some texture to the final product.
