Caravaggio, Baroque Italian Painter: The Gamblers Biography: Caravaggio was born as Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio 1571 in Milan, Italy. He died at the age of 39 in 1610 in a village in Tuscany. His father, Fermo Merisi, was an administrator in the household of the Marchese of Caravaggio, from where his name is derived. Caravaggio apprenticed with the painter Simone Peterzano, who was a pupul of Titian, and later worked in the studio of the Roman painter Giuseppe Cesare as an assistant, before he struck out to work on his own. He was reknowned in his lifetime as a brawler who was outlawed from Naples for killing a young man in a fight and survived an attempt on his life by some of the many enemies he had made, before dying of a fever on a journey to Rome in search of a pardon. Caravaggio is the initiator of the Baroque school and one of the most important innovators in the use of the chiaroscuro technique of painting. Other early Baroque artists include Orazio Gentileschi, Peter Paul Rubens, and Georges de La Tour. Click any thumbnail to view a larger version or make a purchase.
