Biography: Mary Cassatt was born in 1844 in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania (now part of Pittsburgh). She died in 1926 near Paris, France, at the age of 82. Over her family's objections, she studied art at the Pennsylvannia Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. In 1866, she moved to Paris, France, to study the old masters first hand. In 1872, she studied under the Impressionist master, Camille Pissaro and had her first painting accepted by the Paris Salon. In 1874, she met Edgar Degas, who invited her to exhibit with the Impressionists. Degas' art influenced Cassatt, especially in her use of pastels. She was also close friends with Berthe Morisot. Best known for her paintings of mothers and children, Cassatt has been a major influence for both American and women artists. Click any thumbnail to view a larger version or make a purchase.
