Biography: Marc Chagall was born as Moishe Segal in 1887 in Vitebsk, Belarus, which was then part of the Russian Empire. He died at the age of 97 in 1985 in France. Chagall studied art at the Zvyagintseva School in St. Petersburg under the tutelage of Leon Bakst. He later moved to Paris, where he became friends with Amedeo Modigliani, Robert Delauney, and Fernand Leger. He returned to Russia during the First World War and the Russian Revolution, but returned to Paris in 1923. He fled France because he was a Jew after the Nazis occupied France in the Second World War, settling in the United States in 1941. After the war, he returned to Europe, settling in Provence in southern France. Known as a great colorist, Chagall was influenced by both expressionism and folk art.
