Biography: John Constable was was born in 1776 in the village of East Bergholt in Suffolk, England. He died at the age of 60 in 1837 in London. An amateur sketcher since a youth, Constable entered the Royal Academy of Art schools in 1799. One of his early influences was the French landscape painter, Claude Lorrain. Constable and J.M.W. Turner were born a year apart and were at the Royal Academy of Art at the same time, but were never friends. Many of Constable's landscape scenes were located near his birthplace, in and around Dedham Vale, which was later renamed Constable County in his honor. His most famous painting, The Hay Wain, was exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1824, where the French romantic painters, Theodore Gericault and Eugene Delacroix, were influenced by it. Constable actually was more successful selling paintings in France than in England, where he sold only 20 paintings during his lifetime.
