Biography: Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot was born in 1796 in Paris, France. He died in 1875 at the age of 78 in Paris. Initially apprenticing as a draper, he didn't begin seriously studying art until he was 26. Known best for his landscapes, Corot was also a very accomplished figure painter and portraitist. Schooled in the Neo-Classical tradition, he is is generally included among the Barbizon School, an art movement that extolled a return to the painting of the pure landscape, initially inspired by the landscapes of John Constable exhibited in the 1824 Paris Salon. Corot in turn was an important influence on the Impressionist group of painters, among whom Camille Pissarro, Eugene Boudin and Berthe Morisot were his pupils. Born to a wealthy bourgeous family and highly successful as an artist during his lifetime, Corot was reknowned for his generosity and charity, buying a house for Honore Daumier when he was destitude and homeless in old age and helping to support the widow and children of Jean-Francois Millet.
