Biography: Gustave Courbet was born in 1819 in Ornans, in the Franche-Comte region in the east of France. He died in Switzerland in 1877 at the age of 58. He learned painting largely by copying the works of Spanish, Flemish, and French masters in the Louvre. After a trip to the Netherlands, where he viewed the works of Rembrandt van Rijn, Franzs Hals, and other Dutch masters, he dedicated himself to realism. The founder of the French Realism art movement, his works were initially unpopular with the critics and the public, who were used to paintings on literary themes or allegorical subjects, but by 1850 the tide had turned against Romanticism, which had been the prevailing style. Politically, Courbet was a socialist and anarchist. Other French Realist painters included Honore Daumier, Jean-Francois Millet, and Edouard Manet. Check out our Custom Framing options!
