Biography: Montague Dawson was born in 1895 in Chiswick, London, England. He died in 1973 at the age of 78. His father was a sea captain and his great grandfather, Henry Dawson, was a landscape and seascape painter. Dawson grew up in Smuggler's Cove, Southampton. In 1910, he apprenticed to an art studio producing illustrations and posters. In 1914, at the start of the World War I, he enlisted as an officer in the Royal Navy. While in the navy, he met a fellow officer and well-known maritime artist, Charles Napier Hemy, who became Dawson's art tutor and a major influence on his work. During both WWI and WWII, he created illustrations for Sphere magazine, which helped establish his popularity and fed demand for his paintings. He is famous for his paintings of naval battles, classic tall ships, clipper ships, and Royal Navy ships of the line. Click any thumbnail to view a larger version or make a purchase.
