Giorgio de Chirico, Italian Surrealist Painter Biography: Giorgio de Chirico was born in 1888 in Volos, Greece, to a Sicilian father and Genoese mother. He died in 1978 in Rome, aged 90. He studied art at Athens, Florence, and the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. He returned to Italy in 1909, living in Milan and Florence, where he began painting his signature series of surrealist "town square" paintings. In 1911, he moved to Paris, exhibiting works at the Salon des Independants in 1913, where his paintings were noticed by Pablo Picasso and other avant-garde artists and he sold his first painting. During WWI, after being rejected by the Italian army as unfit, he worked in a hospital at Ferrara, while continuing to paint. Following WWI, his works were exhibited widely throughout Europe, being a signal influence on the Surrealism art movement of the 1920s and 1930s. While his fame as a surrealist grew, he rejected the movement and modernism in general, turning instead to traditional painting techniques in the mode of Raphael, Rubens, and other Renaissance and Baroque old masters. He even went so far as to later fake his own earlier works. Check out our Custom Framing options!
