Biography: Eugene Delacroix was born in 1798 in Charenton-Saint-Maurice, near Paris, France. He died in 1863 at the age of 65, in Paris. It is believed that Delacroix's father didn't sire him due to impotence, but that his real father was the French diplomat and ambassador, Tallyrand. Winning awards for drawing when young, Delacroix studied under the Neo-Classicist painter, Pierre-Narcisse Guerin, before going on to become the principal figure in the Romanticism art movement. He was influenced by Peter Paul Rubens and the Romantic painter Theodore Gericault. Seeing the landscapes of the British painter John Constable that were to be displayed at the Paris Salon of 1824 prompted Delacroix to repaint the sky and landscape areas of his own painting, Massacre at Chios.
