Biography: Frank Bernard Dicksee was born in 1853 in London, England, and died in 1928, aged 75. He and his brother, Herbert Thomas Dicksee, were both taught to paint by their father, Thomas Francis Dicksee. Enrolled in the Royal Academy art schools in 1870, he achieved early success painting legendary and historical scenes. He was a reknowned portraitist of the fashionable ladies of his day. He was elected as president of the Royal Academy in 1924. Although a generation later, the style and romanticism of his paintings are reminiscent of the Pre-Raphaelite painters. In later life, he was a vocal critic of the emerging modern art of the early 20th century, which he described as a "cult of the ugly." Check out our Custom Framing options!
