The Art of Drawing is as old as advanced human society, extending from the master cave painters of Lascaux to tody. During the Renaissance, drawing and design (desegno) were considered one and the same thing, as the foundation of the other arts (painting, sculpture, and architecture). It wasn't until the 17th century, however, that drawings had market value as independent works of art - before that they were often discarded as having little or no commercial value. Today, drawing, whether of figures, portraits, landscapes, or still lifes, is seen as being an independent genre in its own right.
