Early Renaissance Art marks the emergence of Italian art from the relative anonymity of the Middle Ages, where painters and sculptors were seen more as craftsmen and artisans than artists. The early Renaissance came to root primarily in Florence, where the Proto-Renaissance (or "Gothic") painters Cimabue (1240-1302) and Giotto di Bondone (1267-1337) in Florence, and Simone Martini (1284-1333) in Sienna, had laid the ground for the flowering that was to follow. Painters who followed after them included Masolino da Panicali (1383-1447), the sculptor Donatello (1386-1466), Fra Angelico (1395-1455), Pisanello (1395-1455), Paolo Uccello (1397-1475), Masaccio (1401-1428), Fra Filippo Lippi (1406-1469), Piero della Francesca (1412-1492), Benozzo Gozzoli (1421-1497), Andrea Mantegna (1421-1497), Giovanni Bellini (1430-1556), Andrea del Verrocchio (1430-1556), Sandro Botticelli (1444-1510), Pietro Perugino (1446-1524), Domenico Ghirlandaio (1449-1494), and Filippino Lippi (1457-1504). Verrocchio was the teacher of Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) and one of Ghirlandaio's apprentices was Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564), forming direct links to the High Renaissance in Italy. A common theme in Early Rennaissance painting is a contining growth in perspectivism and realism, as well as the increasing inclusion of classical and mythological subjects along side of the Biblical.
