Biography: El Greco was born as Domenicos Theotokopoulos in 1541 in Candia, now Iraklion, on the Island of Crete. Crete is now part of Greece, but was then part of the Republic of Venice. He signed his paintings with his birth name, in Greek, but has come down to us known as El Greco, or "the Greek." He died in 1614 at the age of 72 or 73 in Toledo, Spain. Originally schooled in the tradition of post-Byzantine art, he moved to Rome, Italy, in 1570, where he worked in the studio of Titian. In 1577, he moved to Toledo, Spain, where he lived and worked for the rest of his life. He is generally included in the Mannerist school, but the style of his work doesn't fit easily in any category. His work is noted for its anticipation of modern artists, such as Paul Cezanne and Pablo Picasso, and modern styles, such as Expressionism and Cubism. Check out our
