Fra Angelico, Italian Late-Gothic and Early-Renaissance Painter: Detail of Angel of the Annunciation, c.1432-3 Biography: Fra Angelico was born as Guido di Pietro, near Fiesole in Tuscany. The date of his birth is uncertain, variously reported as 1387 or 1395-1400. The 1387 date is due to a report that he was 68 when he died in Rome in 1455. The date discrepancy is important, in that the earlier date puts his birth at the twilight of the Gothic (or Late Gothic), while the later date-range puts it in the dawn of the Early Renaissance. He continued to work as an artist under his birth name until he joined the Dominican Order around 1423 (at 36 or 23-28?), as Fra Giovanni (Brother John). He was known by his contemporaries as Fra Giovanni da Fiesole (Brother John from Fiesole) and by Vasari as Fra Giovanni Angelico (The Angelic Brother John). He was initially trained as an illuminator. He might have received training in painting frescoes and altarpieces from Gherardo Starnina (1354-1413) of Florence and Lorenzo Monaco (c.1365/70-1424) of Sienna. When he moved to the new Friary of San Marco in 1436, Cosimo d' Medici became his patron. In 1445 he was commissioned to paint religious frescoes in Rome by Pope Eugenius IV. Among Fra Angelico's pupils were Zanobi Strozzi (c.1412-1468) and Benozzo Gozzoli (c.1421-1497). Gozzoli taught Domenico Ghirlandaio (c.1449-1494), who taught Michelangelo (1475-1564). Fra Angelico is variously termed as a Late Gothic (or International Gothic), Proto-Renaissance, and Early Renaissance painter. In reality, he is a bridge figure, both looking back to the great Gothic painters Giotto di Bondone (1267-1337) and Simone Martini (1284-1333), and forward to Renaissance painters such as Giovanni Bellini (1430-1516) and Pietro Perugino (1445-1524).
