Biography: Piero della Francesca was in the town of Bogo Santo Sepolcro, or Sansepolcro, located on the Tiber River, in Tuscany, Italy. The exact date of his birth is disputed, with various dates from 1406 to 1422 cited. He died in 1492, also in Sansepolcro. His father was a tradesman and his mother from a noble Florentine and Tuscan family. It is not known who he apprenticed to, but he was undoubtedly exposed to the work of artists such as Fra Angelico, Paolo Uccello, Andrea Mantegna, and Masaccio. Uccello, in particular, influenced him in his use of perspective in the subjects he painted. Painters influenced by him include Perugino and Luca Signorelli. He died on the day that Christopher Columbus set foot in America, October 12, 1492, marking the end of one era and the beginning of another. Check out our
