Biography: Thomas Gainsborough was born in 1727 in Sudbury,
Suffolk, England. He died 1788 at the age of 61 and is buried at Kew, Surrey, England. He studied art beginning at the age of 13 under Hubert Gravelot, Francis Hayman, and William Hogarth. Working originally in landscape, but failing to sell well, he successfully took up portraiture after studying the paintings of Anthony Van Dyck.
Beginning in 1780, Gainsborough became King George III's favorite painter, painting his portrait and receiving many royal commissions. In his later years, he frequently returned to his first love, the painting of landscapes. He is a primary influence on later British landscape painters, including John Constable. Check out our
