Giotto di Bondone, Florentine Gothic Painter: The Martyrdom of St. Paul Biography: Giotto di Bondone was born in or around Florence, Italy, in 1266 or 1267. His father was a blacksmith. He died in 1337 in Florence. He is considered by many to be the most important of the Gothic painters. He was so well regarded that the Commune of Florence awarded him a salary. Little is known about his early life or training in art. Vasari's statement that Giotto, a shepherd boy, was discovered drawing on a rock by Cimabue, the most famous painter in Tuscany at the time of Giotto's youth, appears to be an entirely fanciful tale, although it is probable that he did work under Cimabue, but where and when remains unclear. There is some evidence he studied frescoe painting in Rome, perhaps under Pietro Cavallini. Giotto is credited with breaking with the Byzantine and Romanesque styles, absent of the figural elongation and other stylisms more typical of those earlier styles, but painting more naturalistic figures taken from life, presented within a pictorial depth, rather than simply inscribed on a flat surface. Although his paintings appear crude and naive compared to the later Renaissance painters, they do show a real advance in expressive naturalism and anatomical accuracy over earlier artistic styles. Artists reputed to have been students of Giotto include Simone Martini (c.1284-1344) and Taddeo Gaddi (1300-1366), who might have been Giotto's godson. Check out our Custom Framing options!
