Ando Hiroshige, Japanese Ukiyo-e Woodcut Artist: Navaro Rapids, c.1855 Biography: Ando Hiroshige, also known as Utagawa Hiroshige, was born in 1797 as Ando Tokutaro in a barracks attached to Edo Castle, in present-day Tokyo, Japan. He died at the age of 62 in 1858. Hiroshige inherited his father's position, as a fire warden charged with protecting Edo Castle from fire, a largely ceremonial position. He continued to live in the barracks until he was 43. Tutored as a youth in the Kano school of painting, he apprenticed at the age of 15 under Utagawa Toyohiro in 1811. In 1832, after becoming a member of a Shogunal embassy to the Emperor's court in Kyoto, he produced his most famous series of works, The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido Road (the Tokaido Road linked Edo, where the Shogun resided, with Kyoto, where the Emperor resided). Hiroshige was significantly influenced by his older contemporary, Katsushika Hokusai. In 1856, Hiroshige retired from the world to become a Buddhist monk, and died two years later.
