Biography: Katsushika Hokusai was born in 1760 in Edo (present-day Tokyo), Japan, the son of an artisan serving the Shogun. He died in 1849 in Tokyo. Hokusai apprenticed as a wood carver at age 14, and then studied under Katsukawa Shunsho, founder of the Katsukawa School of painting, starting at age 18. Around 1795, Hokusai broke with the Katsukawa School, studying with the rival Kano School. Affiliating himself with the Tawaraya School for awhile, he broke ties with all schools in 1798, embarking on creating his own unique style of work. Most of the works for which Hokusai is most famous, his Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji and One Hundred Views of Mount Fuji series of Ukiyo-e woodblock prints, were created after the age of 60, or 1820. Hokusai's later work significantly influenced another famous Ukiyo-e master, Ando Hiroshige, who was 37 years Hokusai's junior. Click any thumbnail to view a larger version or make a purchase.
