Biography: William Holman Hunt was born in 1827 in London, England, and died in 1910, aged 83, also in London. His father was a warehouse manager. Hunt grew up in a strict evangelist household where the bible was the primary literature. At 12, he left school to work as a clerk, but dreamed of being an artist. After initially having been rejected, he entered the Royal Academy art school, where he met Dante Gabriel Rossetti and John Everett Millais, together with whom he was later to help found the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Lacking the natural talent of Rossetti and Millais, Hunt's paintings in a Pre-Raphaelite style were not financially successful. Having come from working class roots, he was often in need of money. It was his religious paintings that were to make his name and allow him to make a good living painting.
