Frida Kahlo, Mexican Painter: Las Dos Fridas Biography: Frida Kahlo was born in 1907 in Coyoacan, a small town on the outskirts of Mexico City. She died in Coyoacan in 1954 at the age of 47. The daughter of a German emigrant father and a mestizo mother, Frida contracted polio at the age of six, which left her right leg skinnier than the other. She grew up during the Mexican Revolution, which started in 1910. In 1925, at the age of 18, she was involved in an accident between the bus she was riding on and a trolley, leaving her with serious injuries, including a broken spine and pelvis, and multiple fractures to her right leg and foot, as well as a pierced abdomen and uterus. She suffered from the after-effects of her injuries, often in great pain, the rest of her life, often leaving her bedridden for months at a time. She was unable to bear children, having several miscarriages, and had as many as 25 operations on her back and right leg and foot. Her accident caused her to give up studying to be a physician - she took up painting to occupy her time while immobilized in a full-body cast. After initially seeking him out for advice on advancing her artistic career, Kahlo married the famous Mexican painter, Diego Rivera, in 1929 when she was 22. Overshadowed by her husband during her lifetime, she has since been recognized as an important Mexican and world-wide artistic figure.
