Biography: Torii Kiyonaga was born as Sekiguchi Shinsuke in 1752 in Edo (modern-day Tokyo), the son of a bookseller. After taking Torii Kiyomitsu as his master, and adoptive father, he took the name Torii Kiyonaga as his "go", or professional name. When Kiyomitsu died, Kiyonaga took over leadership of the "Torii" school. Kiyonaga is known for his bijinga, or "beauties," prints, which were often compared to those of Suzuki Harunobu, who was 27 or so years his senior, and Kitigawa Utamaro, who was two years his junior. He is also noted for frequently designing diptych and triptych prints. Kiyonaga, unlike most other ukiyo-e artists, was not born into a samurai class family, but had commoner and middle-class roots. That his biological father was a bookseller does denote that his ancestry was not devoid of learning or culture, however - no one from the samurai class could engage in such a professsion.
