Biography: Paul Klee was born in 1879 near Berne, Switzerland, to a German father and a Swiss mother. He died in 1940 at the age of 60 of scleroderma in Switzerland. When Klee was young he wanted to be a musician, but had also studied art. He attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, where he studied under Franz von Stuck. In Munich, he became associated with the Blue Rider (or Der Blaue Reiter) group of artists, which also included Wassily Kandinsky, Franz Marc, August Macke, Alexej Jawlensky, Lyonel Feininger, and Paul Klee. After serving in the German army in the First World War, Klee taught art at the Bauhaus and the Dusseldorf Academy, until he was denounced by the Nazis for creating "degenerative art" in 1933.
