Biography: Utagawa Kunisada was born as Sumida Shogoro IX in 1786 in Honjo, in the eastern district of Edo (modern day Tokyo), and died in 1865, aged 82. His father, who ran a ferry boat operation, died the year after Kunisada was born. Around 1800, he was apprenticed to Ukiyo-e printmaker Utagawa Toyokuni. He was given the professional name of Kunisada, which is derived from the last four letters of his master's name (Toyo-KUNI) and "sada". Kunisada went on to become the most successful of the 19th century ukiyo-e artists, although he never gained the recognition in Europe and the West that Utamaro, Hokusai, and Hiroshige received.
