Biography: Utagawa Kuniyoshi was born in 1798 and died in 1861, aged 63. He initially assisted his father, who was a silk dyer, designing patterns. He was apprenticed to the ukiyo-e master Utagawa Toyokuni, sharing the "kuni" in their "go" names. A fellow pupil studying under Toyokuni was Utagawa Kunisada. He was one of the first ukiyo-e masters to emphasize western drawing techniques and working from life, rather than from stylized canons. In the 1840s, he suffered under artistic repression in the waning days of the Shogunate, which sought to restrict displays of luxury, banning many of the traditional ukiyo-e subject matters, including depictions of courtesans, actors, and so on. Before his death, he was to witness the opening of the port of Yokohama to westerners, which eventually led to the collapse of the Shogunate and the initiation of the Mejii Restoration. Kuniyoshi's most notable pupil was Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, considered by many to be the last of the great ukiyo-e masters. Check out our Custom Framing options!
