Diego Rivera was born in 1886 in Mexico and died in 1957. He initially went to Barcelona, Spain, to study art in 1907, but shortly after went to Paris, France, where he remained until 1920. He was influenced early by Cubism. He became friends with Amedeo Modigliani, who painted his portrait in 1914. After the Mexican Revolution (1910-1920), he returned to Mexico in 1921, where he became involved in painting large public murals. He later painted a large mural at the Detroit Institute of Arts in 1932, and later painted a mural for the Golden Gate International Exposition in San Francisco in 1940. His paintings usually depicts the peasantry, especially flower sellers. [More...]

Frida Kahlo was born in 1907 in the outskirts of Mexico City, Mexico, and died in 1954. She was struck by polio when she was six. She was seriously injured in a trolley accident when she was 18, induring some 35 operations over the following years. When she was 22, she married Diego Rivera in 1929. [More...]

Nivia Gonzalez was born in San Antonio, Texas. She began painting while at Trinity University, in San Antonio, graduating in 1969. She has exhibited her work widely. Besides painting, she has also illustrated book covers. In 1997, she had a near fatal car accident that left her paralysed on her left side, but after several years of therapy was able to regain use of it. She has lived in Austin, Texas, since 2001, where she is currently artist-in-residence at La Peña Gallery.
