Biography: Marie Louise Elisabeth Vigee-LeBrun was born in 1755 in Paris, France. She died in 1842 in Paris, at the age of 86. She took her first art lessons from her father, the portrait painter Louis Vigee. She was already working professionally as a teenager, having learned from Jean-Baptiste Greuze, Joseph Vernet, and other fashionable painters of the day. Her marriage to Jean-Baptiste-Pierre LeBrun gave her entrance into aristocratic and royal circles, leading eventually to being invited to Versailles to paint Marie-Antoinette, painting over 30 paintings of the queen and her family. Following the French Revolution, Vigee-LeBrun fled France, living in Italy, Austria, and Russia. She was able to return to France during the rule of Napoleon, but never regained the success she had before the revolution. She is primarily known for her portraits in a Rococo style, but switched to painting in a more Neo-Classical style after the revolution. Check out our Custom Framing options!
