Biography: Fernand Leger was born as in 1881 in Basse-Normandie, France. He died in 1955 in a suburb of Paris at the age of 74. Initially trained as an architect, he didn't enroll in art school until 1904. Influenced by Cezanne and Picasso, he developed his own style of Cubism, sometimes referred to as "Tubism," due to Leger's use of cylindrical forms. He served in the French Army during WWI, almost dying from a mustard gas attack. Following the war, he painted in a more "mechanical" style, influenced by Futurism. Later he moved to a more "organic" style, featuring irregular forms. Leger called for replacing the subject with the object in art, treating the human figure as sentimentally inexpressive "plastic value." An avowed socialist, he often depicted workers and common men and women in his works. His focus on ordinary objects have caused some to see him as a projenitor of Pop Art, although, instead of subverting the subject in the interest of a new objectivity, Pop Art re-subjectifies the object.
