Biography: Claude Lorrain was born as Claude Gellee in 1600 in the town of Chamagne, in what was then the Duchy of Lorraine, now part of northeast France. He died in 1682 in Rome. After being orphaned at age 12, he first lived with an elder brother, Jean Gellee, then apprenticed for two years at age 15 to the painter Gotfredo (Gottfried) Wals in Naples, and later to the Italian painter Augustino Buonamici Tassi in Rome. He then worked as an assistant to Claude Deruet, who was painter to the Duke of Lorraine. After 1627, he worked in Rome, under the patronage of Pope Urban VIII. Lorrain pioneered treating landscape (and seascape) painting as a serious genre. He became friends with Nicolas Poussin, with whom he often travelled, sketching landscapes. He influenced the British painters, J.M.W. Turner and John Constable. Constable called him "the most perfect landscape painter the world ever saw." Check out our
