Biography: Edouard Manet was born in 1832 in Paris, France. He died in 1883 at the age of 51 in Paris. He studied art under the academic painter, Thomas Couture. Influenced by Gustave Courbet, Manet initially painted in a realistic style. A seminal work for him was his painting, Luncheon on the Grass, which was rejected by the Paris Salon and sparked great controversy due to its depiction of a nude woman lounging in the company of two men in modern dress. After being rejected by the Salon, it was exhibited in the Salon des Refuses. Manet became acquainted with many of the Impressionist artists, including Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Camille Pissaro, and Berthe Morisot. Manet influenced many Impressionist artists, but chose not to exhibit in any of the Impressionist exhibitions, preferring to exhibit in the Paris Salon instead. Even though his style and technique is closer to the realist painters, his subject matter, depicting contemporary scenes, is typically Impressionistic.
