Fitz Hugh Lane was born in Gloucester, Massachussets, in 1804. Crippled at a young age, probably from polio, he had to use crutches to get around. Drawing and sketching since he was a young man, he was trained as a lithographer. Influenced by the painter Robert Salmon, he began painting maritime oil paintings by 1840. He died in 1865. [More...]
