Michelangelo Buonarroti, High Renaissance Painter and Sculptor: Creation of Adam Biography: Michelangelo Buonarroti was born in 1475 near Arezzo, in Tuscany, Italy. Arezzo was an ancient city, dating back through Latin to Etruscan times. He was raised in Florence, located not far from Arezzo. Michelangelo died at the age of 88 in 1564 in Rome. Michelangelo apprenticed under the painter Domenico Ghirlandaio and the sculptor Bertoldo di Giovanni. Between 1490 to 1494, he was patronized by the Medici, attending their court, but left Florence in 1494 after the Medici were expelled from Florence after the rise of Savonarola, going first to Venice, and then to Bologna. In 1496, Michelangelo moved to Rome, where he was commissioned by the French ambassador to the Vatican to produce one of his most famous sculptures, the Pieta. After the fall of Savonarola, Michelangelo returned to Florence in 1499, completing his most famous sculpture, his David in 1504, as a tribute to Florentine freedom. In 1505, he returned to Rome, where he was commissioned to paint the ceiling of the Cistine Chapel, one of the greatest achievements in the history of art. Check out our Custom Framing options!
