Biography: John Everett Millais was born in 1829 in Southhampton, England, and died in 1896, aged 67, in London. He was born to a prominent family with roots in Jersey. He began attending the Royal Academy at age 11 and while there met Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William Holman Hunt, together with whom he helped form the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848. Sometime after, Millais met the art critic John Ruskin, who was a defender of the Pre-Raphaelites, and his wife, Effie, who it turned out was still a virgin, despite several years of marriage. After her marriage to Ruskin was annulled in 1855, she married Millais, with whom she had eight children. The death of Elizabeth Siddal, Rossetti's wife, following a still-birth, has been popularly blamed on her lying in a tub of chilly water while posing for Millais' Ophelia, but an overdose of laudanum, to which she was addicted, is the likely cause. Other prominant Pre-Raphaelite painters included Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris. Millais was influenced by James Abbott McNeill Whistler and influenced John Singer Sargent. Check out our
