Biography: Amedeo Modigliani was born in 1884 in Livorno, Tuscany, Italy, to a Jewish family. He died in 1920 at the age of 35 in Paris, France. Having shown artistic talent from a young age, Modigliani started studying art in 1898 in the studio of Guglielmo Micheli. He later studied at the the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence and the Istituto di Belle Arti in Venice. His early influences included Giovanni Boldini and Henri Toulouse-Lautrec. Modigliani moved to Paris in 1906, renting a studio in Montmarte. There, Modigliani abandoned the academic style in which he'd been trained in favor of a more modern style, influenced by the Paul Cezanne and Pablo Picasso. Modigliani died young from the after-effects of tubercolosis, alcoholism, and drug addiction. Click any thumbnail to view a larger version or make a purchase.
