Piet Mondrian, Dutch Abstract Painter: Composition with Red Blue Yellow Biography: Piet Mondrian was born in 1872 in Amersfoort, Netherlands. He died in 1944 in New York City. Beginning as a primary school teacher, Mondrian initially painted in a naturalistic and impressionistic style. Mondrian moved to Paris in 1912, where he was influenced by Cubism and Pablo Picasso, but returned to the Netherlands during World War I. There he helped found the De Stijl ("The Style") art movement with Theo van Doesburg. At this time he also formulated an art theory he called Neoplasticism, which advocated a reduction to the simplist abstraction, utilizing straight horizontal and vertical lines, rectangular forms, and primary colors (red, blue, and yellow). After the war, Mondrian returned to Paris, where he lived until 1938. Anticipating the coming of war, Mondrian moved to London in 1938, then, after the Netherlands fell to the Nazis, to New York City in 1940, where he lived for the remainder of his life. Piet Mondrian Serigraphic Prints

Serigraphs, also called "silk screen" prints, are created by pressing different colors of ink through stencils affixed to a fine-mesh screen, traditionally made of silk, but more often now made of polyester.
