Biography: Berthe Morisot was born in 1841 in Bourges, France. She died in 1895 in Paris, aged 54. She was born into a wealthy bourgeois family, which listed the Rococo painter Jean-Honore Fragonard as an ancestor (Morisot's great-uncle). Both Berthe and her sister, Edma, became painters, both of whom studied under the Barbizon landscape master, Camille Corot, who instructed them in the plein air method of painting.
In 1868 she met Edouard Manet, who was to be a significant artistic influence on Morisot. She in turn, influenced Manet to leave his studio and paint from nature. It was supposedly through her that he became personally acquainted with the circle of painters who were to become known as the Impressionists. There is strong suspicion that the two were secret lovers (Edouard was already married) - they both burned their letters from each other when she married Edouard's brother, Eugene, in 1874. She and Eugene had one daughter, Julie, born in 1878, who was to be the subject of many paintings by her mother. Like the American Impressionist, Mary Cassatt, domestic and family life was her principal subject matter, with her portraits of children being particularly endearing. She died in 1895 at the young age of 54 of pneumonia (influenza?), which she contracted while helping treat her daughter for the same condition. Check out our
