Biography: Edvard Munch was was born in 1863 in Adalsbruk, Norway, although he grew up in Oslo. He died at the age of 80 in 1944 in Oslo, Norway. His mother died in 1868 from tuberculosis, leaving Munch and his siblings to be raised by his father (who also died, when Munch was 23). He initially studied engineering, but began studying art at the Royal School of Art and Design in Kristiania in 1881. Munch was influenced by the Post-Impressionism, Symbolism, and Synthesism art schools, and prefigures the German Expressionism movement. He was also influenced by the playwright August Strindberg and the philosopher Soren Kierkegaard. His reputation outside of Norway was established with an exhibition of his works by the Union of Berlin Artists in 1892. His most famous painting, The Scream, was painted in 1893. The Nazis declared his work to be degenerate, removing his paintings from German museums. Click any thumbnail to view a larger version or make a purchase.
