Biography: Maxfield Parrish was born in 1870 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as Frederick Maxfield Parrish, although he later dropped his first name. He died in 1966 at the age of 96. His father, Stephen Parrish, was a noted etcher. Studying originally to be an architect, he had shown a precocious ability to draw and design from childhood. He studied art at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. He studied briefly under the illustrator Howard Pyle, but was already so accomplished, the latter told Parrish he had nothing to teach him.
Influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites, Parrish went on to become the most popular American illustrator prior to Norman Rockwell, designing posters, book and magazine covers, calendars, and other illustrations. Some other well-known illustrators include John Tenniel, Arthur Rackham, Jessie Wilcox Smith, Edward Penfield, and N.C. Wyeth. Click any thumbnail to view a larger version or make a purchase.
