Pablo Picasso's early pre-Cubist work is generally divided into his Blue Period (from 1901-1904) and his Rose Period (from 1905-1907, although paintings dated as late as the late 1920s can fit into this period).
The paintings of his Blue Period feature a color palette in which blue and blue-green are the dominant hues, creating a melancholy or somber mood. Picasso was very poor in this time, often unable to afford oil paint and canvas.
In his Rose Period, Picasso introduces a brighter palette and more joyful mood, likely due to meeting the first of several companions to share his life, Fernande Olivier, whom he'd met in 1904. In his new paintings, harlequins, acrobats, and other circus performers are bathed in orange and rosey hues. Check out our
