Biography: Odilon Redon was born in 1840 in Bordeaux, France. He died in 1916 at the age of 76 in Paris. Although he began studying drawing when 15, at the insistence of his father he initially studied to be an architect, but failed his entrance examinations. He later studied painting under Jean-Leon Gerome. In 1870 he became acquainted with Jean-Batiste-Camille Corot and the Barbizon School. He also associated with the Post-Impressionists, particularly Paul Gauguin, and with the Nabis, including Pierre Bonnard. His work is generally thought of as part of the Symbolist movement and is considered to be an important precursor of the Surrealist art movement. Redon was as influenced by writers as by other painters, including Baudelaire, Poe, and Flaubert. Redon was largely unknown until Huysmans' best-selling novel, A Rebours (Against Nature), featured a character who was a collector of drawings by Redon.
