Biography: Rembrandt van Rijn was born in 1606 in Leiden, Netherlands. He died in 1669 at the age of 63 in Amsterdam. After attending the University of Leiden, Rembrandt apprenticed under the well-known Dutch painter Pieter Lastman. Initially painting Biblical themes, Rembrandt prospered early with commissions from the Hague court. Once established, he won many commissions from the Dutch burghers. Rembrandt suffered bankruptcy in 1656 due to poor financial management. His common law wife, Hendrickje Stoffels, accused of living in sin with Rembrandt after his first wife died, took control of his finances and staved off his creditors. Rembrandt is credited with perfecting the technique of chiaroscuro, dramatically justaposing light and shadow. Other notable contemporary Dutch and Flemish painters include Frans Hals, and Jan Steen.
